What is it?
Olive oil, Olea europaea L., also known as sweet oil, is a commonly used as a salad oil and in cooking. Olive oil is pressed from olives growing in the Mediterranean region. In the pharmaceutical industry, it has also been used as a vehicle for oily suspensions for injections and topically as a demulcent and emollient in creams or ointments. In years past, it was used as a laxative. Olive oil, in moderation, is often promoted as a better oil to improve the lipid profile in cardiovascular disease due to a higher percentage of monounsaturated fats than standard vegetable oil.
